ZAGREB, Nov 24 (Hina) - Deputies at parliament's House of Counties,
who convened on Friday to discuss the goals and intentions of
today's Zagreb Summit, said they did not object to the fact that
Croatia should access the European Union, but pointed out it the
means of accession should be specified.
It should be done individually and not through Belgrade, not
regionally, not in a Balkan association, the deputies said in
conclusions from today's session. They objected to models by which
Croatia would be the locomotive for the region, seeking direct and
bilateral Croatia-EU negotiations
The six conclusions were voted unanimously by 42 deputies. With
those of the Croatian Democratic Union, the opposition party with
the majority of seats which urged today's session, attending were
deputies of the Croatian Party of Rights, the Medjimurje Christian
Democrats, one of the Liberal Party, and one independent deputy.
There was nobody from the ruling six-party coalition and the
opposition's Democratic Centre.
The upper house said Croatia should and was prepared to contribute
to efforts aimed at stabilising conditions in the "neighbouring
Balkans," but that it did not consent to being a hostage to the
region.
It also maintained the presence of Yugoslav representatives at the
Zagreb Summit was incomprehensible and degrading to Croatia's
citizens. The Yugoslavia led by Vojislav Kostunica does not
recognise that it had waged an aggressive war against Croatia and
continues to harbour war criminals responsible for massacres and
destruction throughout Croatia, it said.
The deputies asserted today's debate protected the dignity of
parliament, was the result of revolt and fear, an attempt to warn
the government that it was not entitled to lead Croatia into any
Balkan associations.
Mentioned during the debate were the historic mistakes made by
Croats, as was the late President Franjo Tudjman. One HDZ deputy
said there would be no such fears and doubts if Tudjman were alive.
The debate on the goals and intentions of the Zagreb Summit was the
only item on today's agenda.
