SUBOTICA, Nov 16 (Hina) - The celebration of the 100th anniversary
of the Franciscan province named after Saints Cyril and Methodius
on Thursday took place in the town of Subotica (near the Yugoslav-
Hungarian border).
The celebration commenced with the opening of an exhibition of
historical documents on the presence and activities of friars in
Subotica.
A seminar on this topic ensued afterwards. Friars and historians
spoke of the influence the Franciscan order exerted for centuries
on the lives of Croats and other Roman Catholic believers in this
region called Bachka, which is a part of the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia.
Friars established first primary and secondary schools in the
region (the first primary school was set up in 1823), and theatres
in the towns of Bac, Baja, Sombor and Subotica.
The Franciscan order is viewed as a very important factor for the
preservation of the Croat community and the unity of Croats in the
area.
Friars also helped the Hungarian community to survive there during
Ottoman attacks.
The celebration will end with a solemn Mass this evening.
