ZAGREB, Oct 30 (Hina) - The Zagreb County Court at Monday's session
turned down a request by the defence of former Ustashi
concentration camp commandant Dinko Sakic that detention for their
client be discontinued.#L#
Sakic's attorneys Branko Seric and Ivan Kern requested the
cancellation of detention, claiming the maximum detention time,
two and a half years, had expired.
They claimed the day Sakic was arrested in Argentina should be
counted as the beginning of his detention, which makes the maximum
detention time expire on Oct. 30.
Zagreb County Court president Miroslav Sumanovic told Hina the
court had evaluated the beginning of Sakic's detention was the day
he was extradited to Croatia's judicial bodies. It was decided
Sakic should remain in custody until Dec. 18.
Sumanovic said the Sakic trial had not ended finally as his
attorneys had appealed a Supreme Court decision which confirmed the
verdict reached by the Zagreb County Court.
Sakic, the former commandant of Jasenovac, a Croatian World War Two
concentration camp, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the
maximum sentence in Croatia, for war crimes against civilians. He
is waiting for a final sentence at the Zagreb county prison.
