ZAGREB, Oct 27 (Hina) - Parliament's House of Representatives on Friday unanimously endorsed a police bill and a report on the state of Croatia's banking and financial system in 1990. MPs requested the report last summer to clear the
issue as to who had encountered a more difficult financial situation, HDZ in 1990 upon assuming power from the communists, or the incumbent six-party ruling coalition after replacing HDZ in January. We hope this report will put an end to our debates on who did what wrong and open new ones on how better to solve economic and social issues, said Ivan Suker of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). He reminded the inflation rate in 1990 was 121 and in 1999 4.4 percent, and that a decade ago the gross national product recorded a ten percent drop, whereas in 1999, after several years of continuous growing, it dropped by 0.3 percent. Croatia's external debt in 1990 accounted for 69 percent
ZAGREB, Oct 27 (Hina) - Parliament's House of Representatives on
Friday unanimously endorsed a police bill and a report on the state
of Croatia's banking and financial system in 1990.
MPs requested the report last summer to clear the issue as to who had
encountered a more difficult financial situation, HDZ in 1990 upon
assuming power from the communists, or the incumbent six-party
ruling coalition after replacing HDZ in January.
We hope this report will put an end to our debates on who did what
wrong and open new ones on how better to solve economic and social
issues, said Ivan Suker of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
He reminded the inflation rate in 1990 was 121 and in 1999 4.4
percent, and that a decade ago the gross national product recorded a
ten percent drop, whereas in 1999, after several years of
continuous growing, it dropped by 0.3 percent.
Croatia's external debt in 1990 accounted for 69 percent of the
gross national product, and in 1999 only 48, Suker also reminded.
According to Luka Roic of the Croatian Peasants' Party, one of the
ruling six, the report was a good indicator of every fault and
consequence of administrative economy management. There is no
alternative to market economy, he stressed.
Tonci Zuvela of the Social Democratic Party, the strongest in the
ruling coalition, endorsed the report, saying it had been high time
a controversial period was finally discussed. He objected,
however, to the fact that the report provided no specific answer as
to the exact amount of foreign deposits by Croatian banks and
citizens "frozen" in the national bank of the former Yugoslav
federation.
The lower house today unanimously endorsed a police bill in first
reading.
An item added to the agenda is a package of bills on taxes - a general
tax law, a tax counselling law, and laws on income and profit
taxes.
