ZAGREB, Sept 28 (Hina) - Thursday's open letter by 12 Croatian generals calling on state institutions and the media to oppose the negative and false presentation of the Homeland Defence War is a grave act, former army chief-of-staff
and defence minister Pavao Miljavac said. "It is one of the most serious open letters to the public, coming from people who held the head positions during the Homeland Defence War," said Miljavac, today a Democratic Centre party deputy, when asked to comment on the letter. ZAGREB, Sept 28 (Hina) - Thursday's open letter by 12 Croatian
generals calling on state institutions and the media to oppose the
negative and false presentation of the Homeland Defence War is a
grave act, former army chief-of-staff and defence minister Pavao
Miljavac said.
"It is one of the most serious open letters to the public, coming
from people who held the head positions during the Homeland Defence
War," said Miljavac, today a Democratic Centre party deputy, when
asked to comment on the letter.
According to military analysts' estimates, about 600,000 people
were engaged in Croatia's war of independence from the former
Yugoslav federation, including the army, police, and civil
defence. It is a broad front which showed solidarity when it was
tampered with, and if we suppose that they are armed, the letter
becomes even more serious, said Miljavac.
After this letter, the government has to find a way to quieten the
agitation in the country, he added.
He said if active officers in democratic countries did this, they
would be suspended. The generals' letter, however, does not mean a
mutiny within the armed forces, he said.
Among the 12 generals who signed the letter, six are active military
officials.
