ALEKSOVSKI AND FURUNDZIJA TO SERVE SENTENCES IN FINLAND

ZAGREB, Sept 25 (Hina) - Zlatko Aleksovski and Anto Furundzija were transported to Finland to serve their sentence, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) reported Monday. After an appeal filed in March 2000, the sentence for the former head of the Kaonik camp, Zlatko Aleksovski, was extended from two and a half years in prison to seven years. He was proclaimed guilty for the maltreatment of Bosniaks in the Kaonik camp, over which he had command in 1993. Aleksovski has been in prison for three years and five months which means he is to serve another three and a half years in prison. In December of 1998, Furundzija was sentenced to ten years in prison because, as the commander, he failed to prevent the rape and molesting which took place in headquarters of Croatian forces near the central Bosnia-Herzegovina town of Vitez. He has been detained since late 1997, which means he is to serve another seven years in Finland. In line with an agreement with the Tribunal, apart from Finland, ICTY convicts can serve sentences in Italy, Norway, Sweden, Austria, France and Spain. (hina) it
