NEW YORK, Sept 8 (Hina) - Croatian President Stipe Mesic held talks with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Sadako Ogata in New York Thursday. Ogata informed the Croatian President in detail of circumstances of the tragic
death of three UNHCR members in West Timor, including a 29-year old Croatian citizen from the southern Croatian city of Split, Pero Simundza. Simundza and another two UNHCR members, Samson Aregahegn and Carlos Caceres-Collaz, were brutally murdered in an attack on the UNHCR office in Atambui, launched by the pro-Indonesian militia. According to available data, the tragedy took place when members of a paramilitary group, after the funeral of their leader, decided to vent their anger on the three unarmed UN members. the tragic death of three UNHCR members in West Timor, including a
29-year old Croatian citizen from the southern Croatian city of
Split, Pero Simundza.
Simundza and another two UNHCR members, Samson Aregahegn and Carlos
Caceres-Collaz, were brutally murdered in an attack on the UNHCR
office in Atambui, launched by the pro-Indonesian militia.
According to available data, the tragedy took place when members of
a paramilitary group, after the funeral of their leader, decided to
vent their anger on the three unarmed UN members.
During the savage attack, Simundza and his two colleagues tried to
inform and warn the other UN members and call for help. The other 54
UN members at the location were saved by a helicopter.
According to the UNHCR, the attack in Atambui was the harshest
individual tragedy of the personnel of this global organisation.
President Mesic informed Ogata of the steps the Croatian
Authorities took in the filed of the return of refugees and
displaced persons. He added he expected the international
community to financially help the realisation of the plans.
Ogata expressed satisfaction about Croatia's so far achievements
on the humanitarian plan.
