SPLIT, Sept 78 (Hina) - Pero Simundza, a Croatian citizen who was
killed in West Timor when the pro-Indonesian militia attacked an
UNHCR office Wednesday, was a 29-year old resident of the southern
Croatian city of Split.#L#
He was born on March 18, 1971 in the southern Croatian town of Zadar.
During the Croatian Homeland War (1991-1995), as a student of the
Maritime Faculty in Split, Simundza joined the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
With the humanitarian organisation, Simundza visited all
battlefields in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, and in
early 2000, the UNHCR sent him on a mission in West Timor.
Pero Simundza lived with his parents Josip and Milica in Split.
After the shocking news about the death of their son, desperate
parents were not in a condition to give a statement.
Their relative, Ivan Simundza, told reporters Pero had recently
contacted his parents. He was planning to take his vacation in early
October and visit Split.
Simundza and another two UNHCR members were killed yesterday by the
pro-Indonesian militia in the UNHCR office located in the Atambui
refugee centre. After the massacre, the pro-Indonesian militia
burned the bodies of the UNHCR members and left them on the street.
