On behalf of the UN, an assistant to the Secretary-General, Gillian
Soerensen, accepted this gift.
Unveiling the statue, made by a famous Croatian sculptor, Ivan
Mestrovic, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said his country had
joined a group of member-countries "which have presented to the UN a
part of their identity."
Gillian Soerensen thanked Croatia for the gift as well as for its
contribution to the UN work.
Present at the ceremony were about 50 diplomats, UN officials and
representatives of the New York-based Croatian community.
Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic (1883 - 1962) earned his
international fame in his youth. At the beginning of the Second
World War he immigrated in the United States and died in South Band
1962.
His "The Girl with the Lute" is the second Croatian sculpture on the
UN premises in New York. The monumental equestrian statue made by
Antun Augustincic, was the first Croatian work of art to be set up
within the World Organisation's facilities. This statue is in the
park in front of the northern side of the UN building in New York.
