That crime was committed in Bosnia-Herzegovina but people with
Croatian citizenship were involved in it as well. We have
information that some of the suspects resided in Croatia and that
Croatian authorities were paying them. Those responsible (for the
crime) have to face the consequences, regardless of who they may be,
Mesic said.
Members of the Croat Defence Council (HVO) killed 116 Muslim
civilians in the central Bosnian village of Ahmici in 1993 during
the Croat-Muslim conflict. The International Criminal Tribunal for
former Yugoslavia (ICTY) found general Tihomir Blaskic guilty of
the crime on the basis of his individual and superior
responsibility and sentenced him to 45 years in prison.
Interest in the Ahmici case picked up after it was made known that
the Croatian Interior Ministry had completed a report with
information on the case gathered by Croatian secret services, and
after the report was made known in the latest issue of the
'Nacional' weekly.
Mesic said he had not seen the Interior Ministry's document yet, but
he gave a comment based on what he had read in the media.
According to the document published in 'Nacional', Croatian Army
General Ante Gotovina and Admiral Davor Domazet had allegedly been
preparing the key witness in the Blaskic trial, general Milivoj
Petkovic, for a false testimony.
