ZAGREB, Aug 18 (Hina) - The Croatian Engine Drivers' Trade Union on
Friday announced it would reduce the trains' speed by 50km/h
starting September 1 until the crime and finance polices and
competent parties in the Croatian Railways (HZ) management and the
transportation ministry consider the situation in HZ and
transportation security on Croatia's railways.
The union's vice president, Ivan Tolic, called a press conference
today in the wake of Thursday evening's railway accident at the
Banova Jaruga station, where two cars of a cargo train were
derailed.
Tolic said the latest accident only confirmed the continuity in
similar accidents, as well as the fact that security in
transportation was below the satisfactory level.
Commissions of inquiry were established after recent accidents in
Kutina and Koprivnica, but according to Tolic, they have still not
established what happened and probably would not at all.
The engine drivers' trade union says individuals in the commissions
have "sunk in crime" and that they are involved in purchasing steel
tires illegally and installing them without certification.
The union's president, Nenad Mrgan, says engine drivers can no
longer stand hearing stories about modernisation and the purchase
of foreign trains worth DM100 million when, he says, points like the
one in Banova Jaruga cannot be repaired, forcing trains to slow down
to 5km/h.
Union representatives said they expected HZ manager Dragutin Subat
and Transportation Minister Alojz Tusek to resign in the wake of
yesterday's accident.
