METKOVIC, Aug 13 (Hina) - Twenty-eight crews comprising 336 rowers left the town of Metkovic at 5 pm on Sunday along the Neretva river towards Ploce, a southern Croatian port, in this year's annual boat marathon "Neretva 2000", which
is being held under the auspices of Croatian President Stipe Mesic. The rowers were expected to take two hours to reach their destination in this race, unique in the Mediterranean Sea by the number of rowers and the length of the path. Several dozen thousands of people watched. The winners will receive their medals in Ploce as part of a big show, expected to be attended by parliament deputy speaker Mato Arlovic, Tourism Minister Pave Zupan-Ruskovic, and numerous other high-ranking officials.
