WHITE HOUSE OFFICIAL SAYS CLINTON APPLAUDED MESIC AND RACAN

WASHINGTON, Aug 10 (Hina) - US President Bill Clinton used the meeting on Wednesday night with Croatian President and Premier, Stipe Mesic and Ivica Racan, to commend them for the so far realised reforms and to express his support for them to continue with political and social reforms, a senior White House official said Wednesday night, local time. According to the official, who wished to stay anonymous, Clinton had been excited with the "astonishing speed" with which Croatia had separated from its authoritarian past following elections in January. The official reiterated the American stance that Croatia could be an example to other countries in the region and had in only six months become an important factor of stability and solution to the problems in the Southeast of Europe. Of concrete agreements he said Clinton had spoken with his guests about three American financial packets for Croatia. The first

Of concrete agreements he said Clinton had spoken with his guests about three American financial packets for Croatia. The first, valued at US$21 million, is to be intended for reconstruction. The US will assist with US$4.5 million the construction of homes for returnees, and Croatia would receive US$4 million in the packet of the so-called foreign military financing. This money could be used by Croatia based on its membership in the NATO's programme Partnership for Peace. (hina) lml
