SISAK, Aug 4 (Hina) - At a ceremony held in Slana near Sisak (east of
Zagreb) on Friday, the Croatian Mine Action Centre's deputy head
for international cooperation, Josip Tulicic, handed Swiss
Ambassador Paul Widmer a certificate confirming the completion of a
mine removal operation in Slana, which during the war was on the
first defence line and suffered extensive damage.
The Swiss government financed mine removal in Slana with some
35,000 Swiss francs.
Tulicic thanked the Swiss government for its selfless assistance in
clearing mines of 14,600 square metres of yards, orchards and
fields.
Tulicic said the Swiss government had participated in a number of
mine removal and reconstruction projects in Croatia, providing
funds and technical equipment.
Ambassador Widmer said more than a million US dollars had been
invested by his government in several mine removal and
reconstruction projects in Croatia. He reminded that an
international centre for mine removal was operating in Geneva and
Switzerland wanted to give its contribution to mine removal in the
whole world through this centre.
It is very tragic that in the heart of Europe there is an area
covered with so many mines and Switzerland will continue providing
assistance for mine removal in Croatia, he said, adding his country
was also co-financing a project of reconstruction and refugee
return in the area of Knin.
Also present at the ceremony was Branko Kakaric, head of 'Exbel-
Emercom' company for humanitarian demining and application of
explosives in economy, whose mine removal experts worked in Slana.
An advisory to the U.N. mission for mine removal assistance in
Croatia (UNMAAP), Richard Todd, spoke about the importance of the
Slana project.
