Avraham Burg said in Jerusalem Monday.
Burg, who is also the acting Israeli President, addressed Croatian
First Deputy Prime Minister Goran Granic who is on a four-day
official visit to Israel.
For years, there has been a deep gulf between Croatia and Israel. I
am pleased to be able to say that a heavy cloud which obstructed
relations between Israel and Croatia has been removed, Burg said
welcoming Granic.
The two officials tackled bilateral relations.
Burg stressed that about 80 percent of Croatian Jews were killed in
World War II during the Ustashi regime, and many of them were killed
by their neighbours with whom they coexisted for years.
This dark side must not be forgotten, Burg said and invited Granic
and the Croatian Education Minister to include history of the
Jewish community in Croatia in Croatia's education programme.
Burg stressed that bad relations in the past must not effect the
current relations between the two peoples.
He added Israel admired Croatia's path in its independence and
welcomed the holding of free and democratic elections in Croatia.
After the talks with the Israeli Prime Minister and acting
President, Granic told Croatian reporters that both parties
expressed satisfaction about the arrival of the Croatian
delegation in Israel.
"There is a great interest in the promotion of all relations"
between the two countries, Granic stressed.
He invited Burg to visit Croatia and Burg accepted it.
Granic and the Croatian delegation on Monday also held talks with
Jerusalem mayor Ehud Olmert.
