Minister Davorko Vidovic on Tuesday said his ministry would spare
no efforts to make it possible for disabled persons to be given
priority in employment, particularly with state-run institutions
which have to employ persons with special needs.
Addressing a working table on the implementation of a Croatian
national programme for the improvement of living conditions for
disabled people, Minister Vidovic said he was confident that he
would be able to present concrete results about this matter at
future events of this kind.
The round table, organised by the National Institute for Protection
of Motherhood, Youth and Family, drew representatives of relevant
ministries and associations of disabled persons.
Disabled people make up currently 10 percent of the entire
population in Croatia. With the anticipated upward trend, 20
percent of Croatia's population in 2020 will be invalids.
Opening the round table, Vidovic said the support of authorities to
disabled persons is unquestionable but concrete steps would depend
on the financial ability of the society.
Zorislav Bobus, the head of the Government's commission in charge
of care for disabled persons, said the real state of affairs
regarding this issue would be established upon the census, set for
next year, as a question about invalidity is added to the
questionnaire.
