OPATIJA, July 14 (Hina) - The interior ministers of Croatia and
Slovenia met in Opatija on Friday for talks on a series of topical
issues pertaining to the work of both police forces, particularly
security and traffic during the tourist season, the application of
the Schengen agreement, and illegal immigrants attempting to reach
West Europe across Croatia and Slovenia.
Slovenia's Peter Jambrek and Croatia's Sime Lucin both told
reporters cooperation between the two interior ministries was
good.
Speaking about illegal immigrants, Lucin said 715 were arrested in
June in attempts to cross from Croatia into Slovenia, while 300 who
had managed to cross the border were returned to Croatia according
to a bilateral agreement.
Lucin said Croatia had to deport most of them to their country of
origin, because there is no immigrant return agreement with
neighbouring Bosnia-Herzegovina, whence most come to Croatia. He
was hopeful the issue would be settled during Croatian Prime
Minister Ivica Racan's impending visit to BH.
