Croatian banking market largest in terms of assets in Adria region in 2010, says Deloitte

ZAGREB, July 10 (Hina) - Measured by the volume of assets, the Croatian banking market was the biggest in the Adria region in 2010, while the insurance market, measured by gross premium income, was the second largest behind the Slovenian market, according to an analysis presented by the Deloitte consulting company last Monday on 15 major bank and insurance groups in the region of Adria.

The third annual analysis compiled by Deloitte showed that UniCredit was the leading bank group in the region in 2010, and that Triglav was the leading group in the insurance market in that region consisting of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia.

Presenting the analysis, Juraj Moravek, told reporters that the 15 major bank and insurance groups from those two Deloitte lists held 81% of the bank assets in the region and 90% of the insurance market respectively.

Being at the top of the list of the first 15 bank groups, UniCredit had 19.7 billion euros in assets in 2010, and was followed by the Nova Ljubljanska Banka (NLB) with the EUR 16.8 billion in assets. Intesa Saopaolo (EUR 15.8 billion), Hypo Alpe-Adria (EUR10.9 billion) and RBA (EUR 10.4 billion) followed them.

The Croatian postal bank -- Hrvatska Postanska Banka (HPB) -- was the 14-ranked in that regional list.

As for the list of insurance companies , the leading Triglav Grupa with the gross premium of EUR 943.5 million was at the top of the rankings. Croatia Osiguranje ranked second with EUR 444 million in gross premium, and was followed by Agram Osiguranje (EUR 321.8), Adriatic Slovenica (EUR 270 million) and Zavarovalna Maribor (EUR 259.5 milion).

Deloitte also reported that as for the list of 15 top banks in Croatia, the Zagrebacka Banka (ZABA) remained at the top position.

"As in previous years, Zagrebacka banka, a member of the UniCredit Group, remains Croatia's largest bank, followed by Privredna banka Zagreb, a member of Intesa Sanpaolo, and Erste & Steiermaerkische Bank. Croatia has a distinct division between large and small banks, with its large banks holding over 82 percent of the total assets and achieving higher profit levels than the small players," Deloitte reported.

As for the insurance industry in Croatia, Croatia Osiguranje is the biggest insurer with a 35-percent-share in the market, followed by Euroherc, a member of the Agram Group, and Allianz.
