ZAGREB, June 1 (Hina) - Due to the increasing problem of drug addiction, Croatia's government on Thursday bound competent ministries to work out within a month and a half operational plans for a fast implementation of a national drug
abuse prevention strategy. With an estimated 13,000 drug addicts, or 2.7 per 1,000 inhabitants, drug addiction in Croatia has reached the level of most Western European countries. The number of heroin addicts has grown by 1,500 over the past year. Sixty percent of those who entered detoxification programmes was infected with Hepatitis C. Every year there are about 500 new street drug dealers, and it is estimated that about a billion kuna revolves around drug-smuggling annually.
