Croatian doctor, convicted of bribery, starts serving his sentence in Sarajevo

SARAJEVO, July 7 (Hina) - Croatian doctor Ognjen Simic, who was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for taking bribes in Rijeka, began serving his term in the Sarajevo prison, his lawyer Nikica Grzic said on Thursday.

Simic, who has been behind bars in Sarajevo since 28 June, is the second convict from Croatia to serve his prison term in Bosnia, after Branimir Glavas.

The Bosnian federation's Supreme Court fully upheld the December 2010 ruling of the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo, which also bans Simic from practising medicine for five years after the serving of the prison sentence.

In 2008, the County Court in the northern Croatian Adriatic city of Rijeka found this heart surgeon guilty of corruption and sentenced him to eight years' imprisonment. A year later, the Croatian Supreme Court reduced the sentence to five years. Simic, who has dual Croatian and Bosnian citizenship, avoided serving his sentence in Croatia by fleeing to neighbouring Bosnia.
