Croatia to hold elections for local councils representing minorities on Sunday

ZAGREB, July 7 (Hina) - The head of the state council for national minorities, Aleksandar Tolnauer, has called on ethnic minorities to go to the polls for the election of their local councils or representatives on Sunday, as ethnic minorities' representatives in many communities have played an important role and raised many issues pertaining to minorities' rights.

Speaking at a conference organised on Thursday by GONG and the STINA news agency ahead of the 10 July elections for ethnic minorities' representatives, Tolnauer said that minorities were not satisfied with the date of the elections. However, all organisational assistance was offered to them for this purpose, he added.

The fact that minorities managed to submit their candidacies within deadlines showed their interest in the elections, he added.

These will be the third elections for local councils representing minorities and for their local representatives.

Parliamentarian Zdenka Cuhnil said that 10 July was an unfavourable date which could lead to a low turnout.

She criticised units of local self-government for failing to ensure funds for those polls.

Zorislav Han of the State Election Commission said that 362,317 people were eligible to vote in these polls, which would be organised at 3,730 polling stations.

The turnout at the last elections for minorities' local councils was between 12 and 13 percent.
