MOSTAR, May 31 (Hina) - The international community's mediator in
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Christian Schwarz Schilling on Wednesday said
the situation in Mostar had been improving.
After his talks with local Croat and Moslem politicians, Schwarz
Schilling said he was particularly satisfied with the fact that the
process of the physical integration of Herzegovina-Neretva
cantonal interior ministry was near completion.
The German diplomat added that he was visiting Mostar after he
received letters of HDZ BiH (Bosnia's Croatian Democratic Union)
officials - Jadranko Prlic, Ivo Andric Luzanski and Rade Bosnjak -
who had convinced him that the situation in Mostar had been
improving and that the former policy of non-cooperation had
ceased.
In this context Schwarz Schilling added that changes could be
noticed in this political party as well as in the Moslem-led Party
of Democratic Action (SDA). He believed there were new generations
of politicians who would like to see results rather than playing
political games.
The German particularly commended Mostar Mayor Safet Orucevic and
the recently-elected Deputy Mayor Neven Tomic for making a new
image of this southern city.
According to Schwarz Schilling, both Croat and Moslem politicians
have realised that it is necessary to accelerate changes in Mostar
in order to catch up with other areas in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
He maintained that the improvement of the situation in Mostar had
mainly been caused by recent changes in Croatia following its
parliamentary and presidential elections. In the wake of these
changes, Bosnian Croats have been developing the cooperation with
the other two constituent peoples - Moslems (Bosniaks) and Serbs -
in the set-up of joint bodies of authority. It is in the interest of
Croats, otherwise they would become a part of the Diaspora, Schwarz
Schilling said.
He assessed that the accelerated approach of Croatia to Europe had
been creating a gap between Croatia and Bosnia and that's why, he
said, it is necessary to speed up the establishment of Bosnian joint
authorities so that this country can also be integrated in Europe.
