ZAGREB, May 20 (Hina) - Croatian Judges' Association on Saturday commenced its assembly in Zagreb. Present at the event are Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, U.S. Ambassador William Montgomery and senior officials of the executive,
legislative and judicial authorities in the country. Recalling the past period when it was difficult to administer justice as the judiciary had not been independent and free of political influences, Mesic said politics and executive authorities should not be allowed to interfere in judges' job. Recalling the past period when it was difficult to administer
justice as the judiciary had not been independent and free of
political influences, Mesic said politics and executive

The Association's head Vladimir Gredelj said the Croatian
judiciary was in a difficult position and such situation was for him
the reflection of the general state of affairs in society.
Warning about the unfavourable material and financial position of
the judiciary and judges, Gredelj said the state authorities did
not cease interfering in the independence of the judging system,
despite pre-election promises.
About one hundred judges from all over Croatia are to consider the
work of this association, problems in the work of commercial courts
and the code of ethics of judges.
