ZAGREB CITY ASSEMBLY STARTS CONSTITUENT SESSION

ZAGREB, May 31 (Hina) - The Zagreb City Assembly on Wednesday convened for a session at which a new mayor and Assembly president will be elected. Opening the session, which was called by Prime Minister Ivica Racan, Government Commissioner for Zagreb Josip Kregar thanked the Government for its trust, his assistants, members of the state and city electoral commissions, and Zagreb residents. At Kregar's proposal, the oldest councillor attending today's session, Franjo Zenko, took over the chairmanship of the Assembly until the election of its new president. After the Assembly established its agenda, a credentials commission, headed by Ivan Sikic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was elected. The constituent session of the Zagreb City Assembly is attended by Prime Minister Racan, Deputy Prime Minister Zeljka Antunovic, First Deputy Prime Minister Goran Ivanisevic, Justice Minister Stjepan Ivanisevic, representatives of the Sabor, judicial authorities, political parties, unions, and scientific and cultural workers.
