ZAGREB, April 27 (Hina) - The Croatian Interior Ministry has
received from the President's Office one transcript of talks
without a tape that recorded that conversation about circumstances
of the sale of the Vecernji List daily and one transcript and one
tape referring to the circumstances of the sale of some public
companies and transfer of money.
The Interior Ministry has no knowledge of the existence of some 50
tapes recording something which may indicate alleged misuse and
illegal actions, the Ministry's public relations office reported
on Thursday.
The Ministry expressed regret that it had learnt of the transcripts
and tapes from the media, as this fact can render difficult and slow
down the police work.
It added that Ministry representatives had not been called into the
President's Office during the process of finding tapes and
transcripts to help separate them from the Office's archives.
Only after the news was published by the media, Interior Minister
Sime Lucin requested from the President's Office to forward
documents and tapes to relevant departments of the Interior
Ministry.
The Ministry views the demands for making received transcripts and
tapes public as groundless, since the publishing of relevant
material so far has been detrimental to police operations that are
under way.
Therefore, Ministry officials have been surprised at a statement of
President Stjepan Mesic's spokeswoman Vjera Suman who advised
those who are interested in the matter to address Minister Lucin.
The Ministry said that regardless of the insistence of media
individuals and institutions to disclose some data, it will not
take part in a public debate, as it has not done so in previous
cases. Neither will it inform about the course of the police
investigation as long as it is under way.
At the end of the statement the Ministry expressed hope in good
cooperation with the President's Office in the future and that
there will be no need for media to mediate. In this context, the
Ministry does not deny the right of the Croatian public to be
informed of all important elements in the work of this ministry and
its relations with other institutions of authority.
