ZAGREB, April 13 (Hina) - Croatian President Stipe Mesic on
Thursday received credentials from the ambassadors of Lithuania,
Latvia, Lebanon, Belize and Egypt.
Lithuania and Croatia are two friendly countries which have and had
a lot in common, Mesic said receiving credentials fro the
Lithuanian Ambassador Ginta Bernadete Damusis.
Damusis stressed Lithuania and Croatia, contributing to stability
in their regions, could play a positive role in ensuring peace and
freedom in Europe.
Latvia and Croatia decisively advocate a democratic and peaceful
Europe and are connected by mutual values, the first Latvian
Ambassador to Croatia, Alija Odina, said.
Latvia appreciated Croatia's resoluteness in the development of
democracy and building up of a civil society, she said.
Lebanon understands Croatia's problems because it knows what it
means to survive a war, find strength to end it and establish peace,
Mesic said receiving credentials from Lebanese Ambassador William
Farid Habib.
Lebanon and Croatia have a common characteristic, because of its
geographic position both countries could be economic and financial
centres of their regions, Mesic said.
He recalled Croatia had cooperated with Lebanon and received help
during the war.
According to the Ambassador of Belize, Alexander Piletski, the
handing of credentials to the Croatian President was a historical
moment, as he was the first residential Ambassador in Central
Europe of all countries of the Caribbean community.
"We see Croatia as a European country with a great future with which
we are connected by interests primarily in trade and tourism,"
Piletski said.
Although official relations between Egypt and Croatia had been
established before a short tie, the two countries are in the most
friendly relations, Egyptian Ambassador Ibrahim Abdel Latif said
in handing his credentials to Stipe Mesic.
Egypt followed with the greatest interest the outstanding changes
in Croatia which proved its loyalty to democratic principles, Latif
said, adding he would especially advocate the strengthening of
economic ties between the two countries.
Recalling Egypt was a big country whose civilisation had been the
basis of European civilisation, Mesic said Croatia had cooperated
with Egypt while it had still been a part of the former Yugoslavia,
and would strengthen this cooperation.
