ZAGREB, April 9 (Hina) - Croatia's Government on Sunday allowed investigators of the International War Crimes Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to be engaged in investigating activities relating to the exhumation of an alleged
mass grave in the Gospic area (central Croatia), read a statement released by the Government's public relations office.
ZAGREB, April 9 (Hina) - Croatia's Government on Sunday allowed
investigators of the International War Crimes Tribunal for former
Yugoslavia (ICTY) to be engaged in investigating activities
relating to the exhumation of an alleged mass grave in the Gospic
area (central Croatia), read a statement released by the
Government's public relations office.#L#
"In accordance with international commitments the Republic of
Croatia has assumed, and in accordance with the Constitutional Law
on the cooperation with the ICTY and other relevant acts, the
Government of the Republic of Croatia has permitted ICTY
Prosecution investigators to carry out requested investigative
procedures," read the statement.
Croatian top authorities are sure that the establishment who were
real perpetrators of war crimes will remove suspicion under which
innocent people may be and thus it will help preserve "full military
and moral dignity of the Homeland War."
Zagreb and the Hague-based Tribunal's Prosecution have agreed on
conditions under which investigative procedures can be conducted
as to respect the sovereignty and legal order of Croatia.
The Government's office for cooperation with the ICTY emphasised
that on Croatian territory Tribunal representatives cannot use
coercive measures which restrict fundamental rights and freedoms
of citizens.
The Hague Tribunal's Prosecution requested of the Croatian
Government to allow its staff to be engaged in the exhumation of the
alleged mass grave in a broader area of Gospic (120 kilometres south
of Zagreb).
