ZAGREB, March 28 (Hina) - Three unions of employees with the
Croatian Railways (HZ) announced a one-hour strike for Wednesday.
Unionists said on Tuesday that they would stop traffic along
Croatia's railways from 10.00 to 11.00 am Wednesday. No trains
except those for needs of the Croatian army will drive at that
time.
The unions of engine drivers, railwaymen, and workers employed for
construction and maintenance of rail infrastructure will hold this
action protesting against the intention of the HZ to stop using
several railway roads and offering passenger services on them, as
well as protesting against the Government's ignoring of HZ unions
during negotiations on salaries for users of budgetary means and a
failure to contact Minister of Transportation, Communications and
Maritime Affairs, Alojz Tusek.
The HZ Management is planning to cease giving passenger services on
four or five railway lines in 2000. This move would jeopardise jobs
for almost 1200 employees with the HZ, said a unionist, Nenad Mrgan.
Instead of trains, busses should be used for passengers'
transportation in those directions.
