SARAJEVO, March 24 (Hina) - At the beginning of the second day of an
official visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatian President Stipe
Mesic met students and vice-chancellor of the Sarajevo University
Nedzad Mulabenovic, Friday.
During the short, but relaxed and above all friendly meeting,
President Mesic answered questions asked by students.
Answering a student question, Mesic confirmed he was planning to
visit the southern Bosnia-Herzegovina town of Mostar. I discussed
this with members of Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency and the visit
could be realised as soon as the reconstruction of the Old Bridge,
demolished during Croat-Muslim conflicts in 1993, starts for it is
a symbol of cooperation and connection, the Croatian President
said.
The Croatian President said he was impressed by a fact that the
University of Sarajevo had been functioning during the entire war,
adding he had opportunities on three occasions to see what the life
was like while the capital was under siege.
Student in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina share many problems,
Mesic said and added that the situation in Croatia was slightly
easier because war damage was less. Both countries are in
transition, which means that there is a lack of justice, Mesic
added.
With a humorous tone in his voice, Mesic said there were people in
Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia whose goal was an entrepreneur
society, however, their understanding of such a society was "a bit
grotesque". "Some are doing everything to rob the society, while
other take everything in their power in order not to get robbed",
Mesic said.
He called upon student to, along with their professors, fight for
the prevention of the autonomy of their university and to be the
force which will lead in demands for democratic organisation of the
society, as it is the case in other countries.
Commenting on the current political relations between the two
countries, the Croatian President said he would personally
advocate the solving of all open issues in direct contacts. At the
end of the talks, Mesic promised he would do everything to simplify
the regime at the Croatian-Bosnian border crossings, including an
idea of crossing the border with only an identification card.
