VUKOVAR, Mar 11 (Hina) - Croatian Sabor President Zlatko Tomcic,
who is on a visit to eastern Slavonia, on Saturday met with
officials from Vukovar-Srijem County to discuss reconstruction and
return and the normalisation of life in the county. The talks, held
behind closed doors, were also attended by the head of the OSCE
Coordination Centre in Vukovar, Pierr Peeters.
After the meeting, Tomcic told reporters that the data on economic
activities and reconstruction and return in the county were
discouraging. It is encouraging, though, that the local leadership
believes that there are no more political issues in Vukovar and
eastern Slavonia, he added.
If this is so, and I believe it is, it is time Croatia changed its
approach to this region as well as the model of reconstruction and
return to the Danube region, Tomcic said, adding he supported a
proposal by municipal and county officials and parliamentary
representatives for the adoption of a separate law on Vukovar or
eastern Slavonia.
During his visit to Vukovar, Tomcic also attended a part of an
electoral assembly of the county association of returnees.
Tomcic paid tribute to killed Croatian soldiers by laying a wreath
at the cemetery of Homeland War soldiers and lighting candles at the
cross at the Danube River. He then held talks with Vukovar hospital
director Vesna Bosanac about the reconstruction and operation of
the hospital.
