ZAGREB, Mar 8 (Hina) - Croatia and Hungary will soon sign an
agreement which will enable their citizens to cross the Croatian-
Hungarian border without passports, Croatia's Deputy Foreign
Minister Vesna Cvjetkovic Kurelec said on Wednesday.
"The agreement on the visa regime will soon enable the crossing of
the state border with an identity card," Cvjetkovic told reporters
after a meeting with Hungary's Deputy Foreign Minister Zsolt
Nemeth.
Kurelec said the meeting also tackled the signing of agreements on
bilateral cooperation and free trade.
She announced visits by the highest Croatian state officials to
Hungary, including the visit of Croatian Sabor President Zlatko
Tomcic to Budapest on March 21; President Stipe Mesic's visit in
late April; and a visit by Foreign Minister Tonino Picula, the date
of which will be determined soon.
Hungary's Nemeth stressed the importance of the strategic
partnership between Croatia and Hungary, adding the Hungarian
civil government had never cooperated with a certain Croatian
government but with Croatia as a state.
"Hungary believed that democratic principles were the foundations
of this country and it proved right," he said.
Kurelec said they also discussed possible joint participation in
the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe. Hungary will support
Croatia in joining the trilateral cooperation between Hungary,
Slovenia and Italy.
"This proves once again that Croatia has overcome its international
isolation," she added.
Nemeth announced that Croatian Premier Ivica Racan would pay an
unofficial visit to Hungary on March 17. "Discussed during the
visit will also be the date of his official visit," he added.
The two officials also discussed the situation in the Balkans and
the need of democratisation processes in Yugoslavia.
"Since Hungary and Croatia are Yugoslavia's neighbours, they can
play a very important role in stabilising Yugoslavia and the whole
region," Nemeth said.
The two officials also emphasised the importance of minorities in
strengthening mutual trust and cooperation, and in stabilising the
situation in the region.
