Lawyer says more info on date of Sanader's extradition to be known on Wednesday

ZAGREB, June 20 (Hina) - Goran Suic, a lawyer for Ivo Sanader, who is in extradition custody in Salzburg, said on Monday that more information could be expected on Wednesday about a possible date for the extradition of the former Croatian prime minister from Austria after he withdrew an appeal against his transfer back to Croatia.

"It is up to the Austrian authorities to decide when he will be extradited, any statements by the defence now would be mere speculation," the Zagreb-based lawyer said.

Suic, who will travel to Austria tomorrow to visit his client, said that more details about Sanader's extradition could be known on Wednesday.

Sanader's lawyer in Vienna, Werner Suppan, was quoted by the Austrian news agency APA as saying on Monday that Sanader had withdrawn his appeal, making a court ruling on his extradition effective. Sanader recently said he would agree to a fast-track extradition procedure.

According to Suppan, Sanader's handover to Croatia could be expected in two to three weeks' time.

The Croatian Justice Ministry declined to comment on Sanader's latest decisions.

Sanader has been in extradition custody in Salzburg since his arrest on 10 December 2010.

The Croatian judiciary suspects him of abuse of office and powers in several cases. He is charged with having syphoned money from public companies and ministries via the private Fimi Media company. He also allegedly received kickbacks amounting to HRK 3.5 million for the approval of a loan which Hypo Bank gave to the Croatian government while he was Deputy Foreign Minister. The Croatian anti-corruption agency USKOK is also investigating his role in illegal business deals between the state-owned power company HEP and the private Dioki company.

Sanader is also under investigation in Austria on suspicion of money laundering.

The former PM has claimed he is innocent.

After his arrest in Austria, he expressed his opposition to the extradition to Croatia, explaining that he feared that he would not have a fair trial. Two weeks ago, his lawyer Suic said his client decided to ask for fast-track extradition to Croatia because in recent days his name had been tied with possible negative connotations of Croatia's EU negotiations.
