European Commission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Hans Joerg Kretschner,
told reporters on Thursday the country could lag behind Croatia
considerably in its efforts to join the European Union.
Speaking after a meeting with Croat and Bosniak officials of
Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, Kretschner said the radical changes
promised by the new Croatian government would speed up Croatia's
admission to the EU. Changes in Croatia will affect changes in
Bosnia. However, if that does not happen, Bosnia will become
isolated like Yugoslavia, he said, adding the country was facing a
major turning point.
Assessing that policies based on ethnic principles had no future in
Bosnia, Kretschner supported the establishment of new parties
which would contribute to political changes in Bosnia.
The EC official said he understood the concern of the Bosnian Croat
people regarding their future, but added he could not understand
the policy of a majority of Bosnian Croat leaders because they were
lacking constructiveness and isolating their people.
