ZAGREB, Jan 17 (Hina) - The Croatian school union "Preporod" on Monday requested the new government to change its law regulating the salaries of state officials and cut them by 50 per cent. The new government was requested to change
the law at the first parliamentary session, in line with pre-electoral promises. In a statement issued today, the union said their request also applied to the rights of former parliamentary representatives, which expire upon the expiry of their mandates. "It is a shame that, according to the current law, their pensions amount to between 13,000 and 13,500 kuna, which is what the pension of (Sabor President) Vlatko Pavletic should amount to," the union said. ZAGREB, Jan 17 (Hina) - The Croatian school union "Preporod" on
Monday requested the new government to change its law regulating
the salaries of state officials and cut them by 50 per cent.
The new government was requested to change the law at the first
parliamentary session, in line with pre-electoral promises.
In a statement issued today, the union said their request also
applied to the rights of former parliamentary representatives,
which expire upon the expiry of their mandates. "It is a shame that,
according to the current law, their pensions amount to between
13,000 and 13,500 kuna, which is what the pension of (Sabor
President) Vlatko Pavletic should amount to," the union said.
The union believes it is unacceptable that state officials have the
right to a 100 per cent of their salary (15,000 to 20,000 kuna) for a
period of one year after the expiry of their mandates, and after a
year's time, to 25 per cent of their salary (4,000 to 5,000 kuna)
until they meet retirement conditions or find a new job.
"At a time when there are 365,000 unemployed and another 170,000 are
working but receiving no salary, and more than 200,000 pensioners
receive allowances bellow 700 kuna, a law enabling former state
officials to keep their high financial rights is unacceptable and
highly immoral," the union said.
