OSCE SPOKESMAN HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE (PART 2)

ZAGREB, Feb 9 (Hina) - One area of concern that the mission would like to point to is a recent increase in the numbers of desecrations of Orthodox Church objects, spokesman of the Organisation for the Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission to Croatia Peter Palmer said. In January such incidents took place in the eastern Croatian towns of Tenja, Borovo Naselje, and Daruvar as well as in Kostajnica, about 100 kilometres Southeast of Zagreb. "Such incidents, in addition to showing a disturbing lack of respect towards religious objects, are clearly highly damaging to the re-establishment of trust in the community's concern", Palmer said. "Such incidents, in addition to showing a disturbing lack of respect towards religious objects, are clearly highly damaging to the re-establishment of trust in the community's concern", Palmer said. The mission calls upon all responsible parties to send a clear message that such acts are unacceptable, the spokesman stressed. Palmer also pointed to the problem of demining. He said that apart from the danger to individual, the presence of mines has made other highly damaging effects. Palmer said that mines were damaging to the return process and slowing down the revival of agriculture in regions where they are planted. In this context, the Government's recent submission of comprehensive mine action projects is extremely welcome. It covers mine awareness, the location of mine field and information to tourist about mine areas, the spokesman stressed. Commenting on the past electoral period, UNHCR spokesman Andrej Mahecic said that the UNHCR was pleased to know that issues of concern to the office in particularly the return of refugees and displaced persons was treated as a humanitarian and social issue, not as a political one. He is particularly satisfied with initial meetings with representatives of the new Government. The UNHCR welcomes the positive and constructive attitude of ministers and the new Government in particular the actions that are being taken with the regard to the removal of discriminatory elements of certain laws, thus ensuring equality of all Croatian citizens. Further more, the UNHCR positively notes the expressed readiness of the Government to expeditiously deal with outstanding issues in order to be able to reduce the agenda with the international community, said Mehecic.
