ZAGREB, Feb 2 (Hina) - The newly-elected vice president of Croatian parliament's House of Representatives, Vlatko Pavletic, was born in Zagreb on 2 December 1930. He is a member of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party presidency,
is married with one child. Pavletic was minister of education and culture at Croatia's first government, and in 1992 became a HDZ MP in the Lower House. Following the death of Croatia's first president Franjo Tudjman on 10 December 1999, Pavletic, based on the Constitution, on 11 December became acting head of state. He was re-elected MP at the Lower House at parliamentary elections last month, and was elected Lower House vice president at today's constituent session. Between 1965 and 1972, Pavletic was a member of the Zagreb Communist Alliance City Committee, from which he was expelled as a Croatian nationalist for participating in the writing of a declaration on the position and name of

Following the death of Croatia's first president Franjo Tudjman on

Between 1965 and 1972, Pavletic was a member of the Zagreb Communist
Alliance City Committee, from which he was expelled as a Croatian
nationalist for participating in the writing of a declaration on
the position and name of the Croatian language.
Pavletic was arrested in 1972 as a Croatian nationalist and
sentenced to 18 months in prison for "attempting to overthrow and
change the state order.
Pavletic graduated Croatian language and literature at the Zagreb
Faculty of Philosophy in 1955, and earned his doctor's degree in
1975. He was editor at numerous magazines and publications.
Pavletic has worked as assistant lecturer since 1960, and taught
literature at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb. He has been a
member of the Croatian Writers' Association since 1951, as well as a
member of the Croatian Cultural Society, the PEN club, and the
Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences.
