ZAGREB, Jan 28 (Hina) - The Croatian Journalists' Association (HND)
on Thursday most strongly condemned death threats by individuals of
Albanian nationality directed against Otvorena Televizija (OTV)
reporter Josip Kelemen and his associates.
Kelemen is the author of "Hello, Inspector" programme, produced by
the OTV and the State Inspectorate, the purpose of which is to
demonstrate forms of protection of consumers' rights in all areas
of economic services. The programme was first shown on OTV on
January 18 this year, a statement by the OTV and State Inspectorate
said.
The first two shows were dedicated to conditions in the production
of the basic food product - bread, with the reporter revealing the
other side of bread production in bakeries visited by inspections,
the statement said. Some Albanian owners of bakeries have
interpreted the case as a media attack which was motivated by ethnic
hatred rather then by the real problem of law-breaking. Identifying
themselves as members of the "Albanian lobby", those individuals
requested that the show be cancelled and threatened to kill
Kelemen.
Kelemen has already contacted police seeking protection for his and
his colleagues' families, the OTV statement said.
The HND said in its statement it wanted to encourage Kelemen and
other reporters working on the establishment of the truth, and
called on competent bodies of authority and the new government to
put an end to crime, corruption and illegal business.
