PROFILE OF VICE-PREMIER GORAN GRANIC

ZAGREB, Jan 28 (Hina) - Goran Granic, a newly-appointed Vice- Premier, was born in Baska Voda on April 18, 1950.He graduated from Zagreb's Faculty of Computing and Electrical Engineering in 1972 and earned his master's and doctor's degrees in 1976 and 1979. From 1973 to 1987 Granic worked as a researcher and headed a research team and a study unit at the Institute for Power Industry. Between 1987 and 1990 he was development director and member of the Management Board in Croatia's community of power production organisations. Following democratic changes in Croatia, Granic was appointed the first director of the Croatian Power Industry (HEP). In 1991, he joined again the Institute for Power Industry as an advisor and in June 1994 was appointed director of the power industry institute "Hrvoje Pozar". From 1922 to 1995 Granic was a representative at the Croatian National Sabor and chairman of the Committee for Urban Planning and Environmental Protection. During 1995 he was the first vice- president of the House of Representatives. In 1996 he was elected Zagreb mayor but the President of the Republic did not approve his appointment. He has been a member of the HSLS Head Committee since 1992 and party vice-president since 1995. He is currently the party's acting head.
