ZAGREB, Jan 8 (Hina) - The acting president of the formerly ruling
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said on Saturday the plebiscitary
support he received for his new function at a recent session of the
party's Head Committee was neither a putsch nor a witch-hunt.
Speaking to reporters in Zagreb, HDZ's Vladimir Seks said the party
would no longer tolerate anybody's arrogance or debauchery. All who
behaved in that manner will end on the political margin or even out
of politics, he asserted, but declined to name names.
It is a cleansing aimed at establishing the reasons for the poor
results the party made at January 3 parliamentary elections, he
said.
Speaking about HDZ's aims, Seks emphasised the necessity of
defining the party as a modern European people's party of
democratic Christian orientation. The HDZ will find the strength to
heal the wounds and consolidate its ranks, and do everything to
preserve the party's unity and maximum intraparty democracy, he
asserted.
Seks announced intraparty elections under new rules, the aim of
which will be to make the HDZ a quality- and strong party for the
next parliamentary elections.
Until then we will be a constructive opposition always closely
watching how the coalition which won the recent elections is
fulfilling its electoral promises, he said.
Seks called on the SDP/HSLS coalition to propose as soon as possible
the make-up of the new government and to begin fulfilling its
electoral promises.
Assessing that electoral winners Zeljka Antunovic and Davorko
Vidovic of the Social Democratic Party and Radimir Cacic of the
Croatian People's Party were announcing revanchism towards the
HDZ, Seks claimed "it is evident (political) correctness will be
the fundamental criterion, and not skills."
Responding to a reporter's question, Seks confirmed the government
would not take any new financial obligations until the transfer of
authority.
