ZAGREB, Jan 7 (Hina) - The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (SSSH) welcomes the change of authority at the January 3 parliamentary election because it represents the possibility of establishing a social state and the

ZAGREB, Jan 7 (Hina) - The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of
Croatia (SSSH) welcomes the change of authority at the January 3
parliamentary election because it represents the possibility of
establishing a social state and the rule of law, SSSH president
Davor Juric told reporters on Friday.
Juric called on the new Government to be fair in assessing the
contribution of non-government organisations to the large voter
turnout and use their help in its work.
"Regretfully, the whole public life after the elections is
revolving around politicians and political parties, whereas the
winners and losers equally are neglecting the institutions of civil
society - non-government associations, which have significantly
contributed to the large voter turnout," Juric said.
The SSSH offers the new Government the services of its competent
infrastructure as well as its international connections, but it
seeks in return social dialogue and a consensus of all social
partners in the making of decisions in the area of labour.
"Don't be like the last authorities. Don't build authority on
monopoly but seek help of all those who can provide help, including
the SSSH," Juric urged the Social Democratic Party-Croatian Social
Liberal Party (SDP/HSLS) coalition and the "Opposition Four."
The SSSH president said the Federation had not agreed on social
peace with anyone, including the new coalition Government.
"Due to the difficult economic and social situation of its members,
the SSSH will not give the new Government even the initial 100 days
of social peace. It (the Government) has to earn them by fulfilling
its promises regarding the revision of ownership transformation
and privatisation and respect for the Agreement on a Just Croatia,
signed by the SSSH and the Opposition Six," Juric said.
Speaking about presidential candidates, Juric said the SSSH
presidency would on Tuesday decide which candidates to recommend to
its membership.
The SSSH demands from the incumbent government a list of the
ministries' debts to companies as well as the consolidation of
state finances for the last quarter of 1999 so that as many workers
as possible could receive wages.
An SSSH vice-president Bozo Zaja requested Premier Zlatko Matesa to
open a debate on the SSSH request of November for a 20 per cent rise
of the lowest salary and basic salary from the current 1,500 to
1,800 kuna.
