ZAGREB, Jan 6 (Hina) - Parliament President and acting Head of State
Vlatko Pavletic announced that he might appoint the new premier
designate in line with his powers as an interim president.
The Social Democratic Party/Croatian Social Liberal Party
(SDP/HSLS) coalition, which won the January 3 parliamentary
election, nominated Ivica Racan as future premier.
"Although it seems logical for that task be performed by the new
parliament president, I do not exclude the possibility of us
reaching an agreement and me appointing the new premier designate
because I am authorised to do that by my powers as the temporary head
of state authorise," Pavletic told the "Vecernji list" daily on
Friday.
"I care about the new parliament and government being constituted
as soon as possible because we must not allow vacuum to occur in
exercising authority," Pavletic said, adding he intended to start
separate talks with the leaders of all parties which entered the
parliament as of Monday, "so that we can consider the constitution
of the new parliament."
"I will not talk only with Racan and Budisa but with all leaders of
the Opposition Four, the temporary president of the Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ), and the leaders of the Right-Christian-
Democrat coalition," he added.
Pavletic reminded that the House of Representatives had to be
constituted 20 days after the announcement of final election
results at the latest. Repeating the voting at 11 polling stations
(scheduled for January 16) will prolong this procedure.
