THE HAGUE, Dec 11 (Hina) - The International Criminal Tribunal for
the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Trial Chamber, which is conducting
proceedings against ex-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, on
Tuesday said two trials might be held against Milosevic - one for
Kosovo, and one for Croatia and Bosnia.
After the Prosecution requested combining the trials for Croatia,
Bosnia and Kosovo into one, the Trial Chamber president, Richard
May, said two trials might be held. May said the judges believed the
events that took place in Croatia and Bosnia had occurred at the
same time and in neighbouring states in which Milosevic acted
through mediators. The crimes in Kosovo occurred much later, during
1999, and in a country where the indictee held the office of
president, which makes him directly responsible.
The ICTY Chief Prosecutor, Carla del Ponte, said the combined trial
would provide a rounded picture of Milosevic's responsibility, and
be in the interest of the victims as it would be completed sooner
than separate trials.
