RETURNEES DISSATISFIED WITH SITUATION IN AREAS OF SPECIAL STATE CONCERN

ZAGREB, Dec 7 (Hina) - Dissatisfied with the pace of economic revival in areas of special state concern, Croatian returnees on Friday requested an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Ivica Racan and his first deputy Goran Granic, who chairs a government body in charge of areas of special state concern. The president of the Association of Returnees of Croatia (ZPH), Josip Kompanovic, said at today's session of the ZPH steering committee government decisions on economic revival were not being implemented in the areas of special state concern, which was the reason why there was no progress in employment and the reconstruction of infrastructure and why young people were leaving the areas. Kompanovic urged the government to extend its social programme for returnees, which includes allowances amounting to 400 kuna, food, subsidised electricity bills, and allowances for the parents of high school students for transport and books. The programme expires on December 31. The association expressed satisfaction with the reconstruction of returnees' houses and flats and requested a meeting with Public Works, Reconstruction and Construction Minister Radimir Cacic to discuss the possibility of introducing more subsidies to finish works on repaired housing facilities.
