The manufacturer's price accounts for only 30 percent of the retail
price, as against 60 percent in neighbouring states, making
domestic manufacturers almost twice as expensive as abroad, he
said, adding the cancellation of a 16-percent tariff on imported
milk was an additional blow to domestic manufacturers. There is
also the fear of importing milk of suspicious quality.
The Croatian Farmers' Alliance seeks additional reductions,
subsidies and inducements for farmers, as well as the use of blue
oil, said Golubic.
"The dairy industry is turning towards the import of milk instead of
protecting domestic manufacturers and livestock," said Alliance
president Ivan Kolar.
He expressed concern about the fact that the draft state budget for
2002 does not envisage funds for reorganising the agricultural
sector and the reform of the inducements system. A step backwards
has been made in this respect, said Kolar.
