ZAGREB, Nov 8 (Hina) - President of the Alliance of Independent
Croatian Unions (SSSH), Davor Juric, on Thursday called on Croatian
unions to join in the movement against the announced decrease of
workers' rights.
"We must create a joint worker resistance front against the
irresponsible policy of the government, parliament and employers
who claim that workers' rights are too great and should be curbed,"
Juric spoke before some three hundred protesters in front of the
government building who were rallying since 9am.
Members of the SSSH, representatives of the Croatian Association of
Trade Unions, the Association of Unions of Public Services and
other trade unions rallied today against the attitude the
government and employers have towards collective negotiations and
against the unacceptable mode of health and social reform which
"degrade the dignity of Croatian workers".
"Workers, pensioners and other social categories alone cannot bear
the burden of reforms which are being carried out. It should be
evenly distributed among all social structures," Juric stressed.
He added that problems should be solved through agreements because
"unions will not accept laws passed abruptly and
inappropriately".
He warned about the inefficiency of the judiciary which should
sanction criminal acts committed by moguls. Unused capital in
banks, money from the pockets of moguls and capital drawn out of the
country must be placed in the function of economic development,
Juric asserted.
Expressing concern about the problem of brain drain, Juric urged
young people to "tread on those who are incapable, but politically
suitable" in order to take their place.
A steel fence surrounded the location on St. Mark square in front of
the government and parliament buildings where the protesters
gathered.
Finally booing the government and parliament, the protesters
dispersed after 10am.
