JERUSALEM, Oct 30 (Hina) - Terrorism is a global threat which calls for a global response, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said at Jerusalem's Hebrew University on Tuesday. The Croatian head of state held a lecture entitled
"Re-defining International Relations in the Context of Threats of Global Terrorism." "The attacks on New York and Washington were, without doubt, more than just an attack on the United States, and a global threat demands a global response - an anti-terrorist coalition," Mesic said. The Croatian President reminded that terrorism "has a long history, and terrorists do not recognise borders, nationality or religion, even though they like to hide behind religion." JERUSALEM, Oct 30 (Hina) - Terrorism is a global threat which calls
for a global response, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said at
Jerusalem's Hebrew University on Tuesday.
The Croatian head of state held a lecture entitled "Re-defining
International Relations in the Context of Threats of Global
Terrorism."
"The attacks on New York and Washington were, without doubt, more
than just an attack on the United States, and a global threat
demands a global response - an anti-terrorist coalition," Mesic
said.
The Croatian President reminded that terrorism "has a long history,
and terrorists do not recognise borders, nationality or religion,
even though they like to hide behind religion."
The anti-terrorist coalition's resistance to global terrorism is
not a conflict of civilisations, but a conflict between
civilisation and non-civilisation, Mesic said and expressed
satisfaction that both Croatia and Israel were on the side of the
anti-terrorist coalition.
Croatia's head of state on Tuesday afternoon met the mayor of
Jerusalem, Ehud Olmert, the director of the Simon Wiesenthal
Centre, Efraim Zuroff, and representatives of the Israeli families
whose members have been abducted by the Hezbollah.
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said the Hezbollah was a sadistic
terrorist organisation and Israel would not negotiate with it.
On Wednesday, Mesic will visit the Yad Vashem memorial centre and
Israel's parliament (Knesset) and hold talks with Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon.
The Croatian President will address Israeli MPs at a plenary
session which will be broadcast live on the Israeli television. In
his speech at the Knesset, Mesic will stress the historical
significance of his visit to Israel and apologise, on behalf of
democratic Croatia, to all those who suffered at the hands of
Croats, particularly to the Jews. He will also state that Israel has
the right to peace and security but that the Palestinians have the
same right and the right to their own state.
Today's issue of "Ma'ariv", Israel's second largest-circulation
daily, ran parts of a draft of Mesic's speech at the Knesset, saying
the speech did not include an explicit apology for crimes committed
against Croatian Jews during World War II.
