Macedonian Constitution and the content of its preamble. President Boris Trajkovski, who moved the constitutional changes suggesting a better position for the Albanian population, which have been facing harsh opposition in parliament, has proposed an additional text which would list the Macedonian people and all national minorities. Trajkovski asked for consent for his proposal from the EU and US President George Bush. for foreign affairs and security, Javier Solana, held talks in
Skoplje on Friday with top Macedonian state and political officials
about procedures on changing the Macedonian Constitution and the
content of its preamble.
President Boris Trajkovski, who moved the constitutional changes
suggesting a better position for the Albanian population, which
have been facing harsh opposition in parliament, has proposed an
additional text which would list the Macedonian people and all
national minorities. Trajkovski asked for consent for his proposal
from the EU and US President George Bush.
During Friday's talks with the leaders of Albanian political
parties, Solana said progress had been achieved in the work on the
Constitution's preamble, and negotiations would continue.
Albanian party officials said they were prepared for a new solution
to the preamble, if alongside the Macedonian people it listed
Albanian nationals.
The crisis areas of Tetovo and Kumanovo are quiet during the day,
but shots are still fired during night-time from several directions
where police are patrolling sections inhabited by Macedonians.
Albanians have managed to resist police patrols which have not been
present in their settlements since Thursday.
Locals are reportedly massively returning to now police-controlled
villages, relying on assistance from humanitarian organisations
and reconstructing their homes.
