LJUBLJANA, Oct 25 (Hina) - Slovene President Milan Kucan advocated
on Thursday the closing of traumatic chapters from recent history,
such as the controversy over mass murders committed in Slovenia in
1945.
"A crime is a crime and those responsible must answer for it, but the
dead do deserve dignified memories and peace regardless of
different assessments about their possible mistakes", Kucan said
at a celebration marking the 10th anniversary of the departure of
the former Yugoslav People's Army from Slovenia.
He commented on the recent political controversy between the right
and the left wing over marking the locations of post-war
liquidations, which are still being discovered in forests
throughout Slovenia, and over formulating a parliamentary
declaration by which the incumbent government would distance
itself from the events and condemn them.
Answering to claims of right wing parties that reconcilement and
denouncement of crimes that have occurred a long time ago have not
been done because of "communist continuity" and ideological
labelling of victims, Kucan said that "both collaboration and
liquidations" deserved condemnation. There is no excuse for
collaboration and there is no justification for murders without a
court verdict, Kucan said at the ceremony.
