ZAGREB, Oct 19 (Hina) - The Croatian Justice, Administration and
Local Self-Government Ministry has rescinded nine contentious
provisions in the Dvor Municipal Statute, including the one
stipulating that, along with the Croatian language and Latin
script, the Serb language and Cyrillic script is also officially
used in the municipality.
The statute was passed on October 5 with a majority of votes by
municipal councillors in Dvor, which has a predominant Serb
population.
Of the 15 municipal councillors, four, members of the Croatian
Block (Croatian Democratic Union, Croatian Party of Rights and
Croatian Christian Democratic Union) voted against the motion, as
did a councillor of the Social Democratic Party.
Local branches of the Croatian Democratic Union and the Croatian
Party of Rights requested that the provision be withdrawn.
Settling the language issue is not in the competence of
municipalities and therefore cannot be defined by the statute of a
local self-government unit, the Ministry said.
