ZAGREB, Oct 17 (Hina) - Foreign diplomats who recently met the
Vatican's secretary for relations with states, Jean-Louis Tauran,
in Zagreb are grossly manipulating that meeting, read the editorial
in the latest issue of the leading Catholic weekly, "Glas
Koncila".
The editorial headlined "Manipulation or Something Even Worse?"
comments on the "presentation of the meeting" between Archbishop
Tauran and three ambassadors of European Union members.
This meeting was also the topic of an article of the 9 October issue
of the weekly "Nacional" which claimed the EU asked the Vatican to
stop Roman Catholic clergy right-wingers in Zagreb. According to
"Nacional", which quoted "European diplomatic sources", the Holy
See was asked to prevent Croatian bishops from attacking legitimate
authorities in the country and demand of them to discontinue openly
supporting the most radical nationalist elements that are trying to
topple the democratically elected authorities.
Commenting on the accusations, which according to 'Nacional' were
relayed by the EU Troika to the Vatican's dignitary, Glas Koncila
reads that "it is possible that such accusations and demands are a
deliberate manipulation of the meeting".
Such manipulation will suit "certain political forces in Croatia
that do not care about real democracy or about the survival and
development of the Croatian state," the Catholic paper added.
For such political forces, the Catholic Church would probably be
acceptable and good only if it uncritically and obsequiously took
sides with them or if it completely vanished from the political and
historical scenes, the editorial read.
If the said EU diplomats expressd real political stands, it would
mean that the European policy interfered in the internal affairs of
other internationally recognised and independent countries, the
Catholic weekly said.
Besides, it would mean that the current European policy "does not
recognise sovereign countries, in this case Croatia, as subjects of
international law, but accepts political groups of like-minded
persons in those countries," the editorial read.
